In 1973, they moved near Lewellen, she worked at Albees, and for Ash Hollow State Park for many years. She went into Riverview Assisted Living and in 2009 and in 2011 went to live at Indian Hills Nursing Home in Ogallala. Among her hobbies were gardening and canning, crocheting, playing cards, watching rodeos, and visiting with her friends. Survivors include her daughters, Rosalie Orr and husband, Butch, of Lewellen, Dolores Tague and her husband Tim and granddaughter Skylan Curnett of Omaha. Peter W. Ernst Jr. died at age 54, at 9:20pm Friday December 14, 1956 at St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska after an illness of about two weeks. D. G. Bartels, son of George and Adele Bartels, natives of Germany, was born on a farm south of Chicago, in Cook County, Illinois, January 9, 1858. His parents settled in Illinois in the early 1850's, and D. G. attended the local schools and worked on his father's farm.
On December 19, 1881, he married Dorothy Rodehorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rodehorst. Mrs. Bartels was also a native of Illinois, and was born September 11, 1860, only five miles from D. G. Bartels' boyhood home.
After their marriage, they lived on a farm south of Chicago for four years, and then moved to Platte County in 1885, when they bought a three hundred-acre tract of land five miles north of Columbus, for twenty dollars an acre. This land was purchased from the Plety Brothers, Hollanders, who had come here from the east to speculate on land.
Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Bartels established their home on this farm on the prairie. They experienced both the hardships and pleasures of pioneer life in the community, and celebrated their Golden Wedding on December 19, 1931.

LOUIS JOHN ERNST Long time San Carlos resident, Louis Ernst died peacefully at Sierra Sunrise of Belmont on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 of natural causes. Mr. Ernst was born on May 22, 1912 and was just short of 94 years of age when he passed on March 7. He was born in the small town of Columbus, Nebraska and moved with his wife, Frieda, to California shortly after they were married in order to provide better opportunities for themselves and their family. Once in California they both took jobs and after the war they built the family home in San Carlos, which was frequently a gathering place for the entire family both on special occasions and drop-in visit. Lou worked first in the Kaiser Ship yards during World War II and then for the City of San Mateo in the Engineering Department using the skills he had learned while working in the CCC during the depression. Lou and Frieda raised two children, Jerry and Gail, who gave them four wonderful grandchildren, Andrea, Ronald, David and Brian. These children also blessed Lou with great grandchildren, Brett, Taylor, Brandon, Bailey and Travis. Lou had many faithful caregivers during the last years of his life at Sunrise of Belmont and the family is thankful for all of the love they gave their father and grandfather. A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in San Mateo at 1501 South El Camino Real at 2:00 p.m. on March 18th, 2006. A reception will follow the service at St. Andrew's Church.
