FAMILY STORY BY MRS. MARION PODANY

John Koch was originally buried in St. Bonaventure Cemetery at Raeville, Boone County, Nebraska he was moved after the death of his wife to St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Petersburg, Boone County, Nebraska.

John Koch was born April 14, 1822 in Luxembourg and died January 15, 1909 near Petersburg, Nebraska at the home of his son Cornelius Koch.

Anna Maria Schroeder was born April 24, 1852. Her mother was Elizabeth Ambrosius. She died March 7, 1919 near Petersburg, Nebraska at the home of her daughter Anna Majerus.

Making a living in Luxembourg for their growing family was becoming more difficult for John and Anna Koch. Therefore, the decision was made to come to America, if enough money could be saved to make the trip. Many days they ate nothing and other times the cooked oats from the bin for an inexpensive meal.

Finally, in 1867, John and Anna packed up their children, Cornelius, Mary, John and Nick at their home in Consthum, Luxembourg and boarded a ship headed for the United States. To conserve space they brought only one large cooking pot with a spoon for each member of the family. At meal time they would take turns spooning out food. When the children liked the food they would take as much as their spoon could hold. If it was not so tasty, they would turn their spoon upside down when it was their turn to take food.

The birth of their son, Frank occured shortly after their arrival at Hartford, Wisconsin. A few years later Matthew and Anna were born. The promise of large tracts of untilled land in the Central Plains prompted them to load their family and belongings in a covered wagon and head southwest in 1876. Anna baked many crackers to eat on the way. John kept their containers filled with water from the creeks. The crossed the Missouri River on a ferry and took up residence in a dugout in the Looking Glass community northeast of St. Edward, Nebraska. Later they put up a sod shanty, followed by a wood frame house.

While they lived there, two of their sons died. Nick died shortly after his marriage, during an attack of intestinal inflammation (appendicitis). At age 10 Matthew died of diptheria. The doctor from Columbus counseled Anna on the care for diptheria and she was able to save the life of their daughter Anna and several neighbors. John was handicapped because of a lack of nearby medical aid. He cut his eye on a sunflower and walked to Columbus, but the doctor was unable to save it, and he became blind in the eye.

In 1895 they moved to the Petersburg vicinity. They settled on an 80 acre farm just south of the County Hill, adjoining the farm now occupied by the Jerry Bode family. Later they lived with the Jim Majerus and Cornelius Koch families.

Many of their descendants have been residents of the Petersburg area. Following is a list of their children with their spouses and the grandchildren with their spouses.
