----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On January 12, 1944 at a Norfolk hospital, death claimed one of Petersburg's most respected and oldest citizens and one of Nebraska's real pioneers, Cornelius Koch, aged 91, the eldest of a family of nine children. He came to Nebraska in 1876 with his parents, driving from Hartford, Wisconsin overland in a covered wagon to Platte County, near St. Edward, where they took a homestead.

He liked to tell how he had walked many times to Columbus, a distance of twenty-nine miles to get groceries for the family, and also to Albion, which was sixteen miles distant. He remembered when Boone county held its first Fourth of July celebration and also the great blizzard of 1888 in which six of his cows were frozen to death.

Mr. Koch was a successful farmer and was highly thought of for his good habits, his integrity, and his Christian manner of life. He was unusually active for a man of his age and was able to attend to his duties and to walk to church up to within a few days of his death.

Cornelius Koch was born in Luxembourg, August 24, 1852. At the age of 15 he came with his parents to the United States and settled at Hartford, Wisconsin. That was in 1867. The family lived in Wisconsin for nine years when they came to Nebraska.

On April 18, 1882, he was married to Anna Hau (Howe) and moved to Raeville in 1894 and to Petersburg in 1918. Eight children were born to the above named union, seven of whom are living, one having died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mary Loxterkamp, Mrs. Catherine Grone, Frank and Anton of Petersburg, John of Salem, Oregon; and William and Bernard of Norfolk. He also took into his home and raised an orphan boy named Alex who now lives in Omaha. All of the children were present for the funeral except John for whom it was impossible to come.

His wife, Anna, died at her home in Petersburg in November 26, 1934. Surviving besides the seven children named here are twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He passed away January 12, 1944 and funeral services were held from St. John's church, Reverend Albert Sudbeck officiating. He was laid to rest beside his wife in St.l John's cemetery. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: John, Joe, Louis and Andrew Koch; Joe and Peter Majerus.

The Koch Children

From the Albion Weekly News, Issue dated January 29, 1944
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cornelius was born to John and Anna Schroeder Koch in Luxembourg, August 24, 1852. He came to the United States with his family at age 15, settling near Hartford, Wisconsin. He took a job with a dairy farm so that the family could have a dairy cow. Nine years later they came by covered wagon to Nebraska, settling in the Looking Glass community near St. Edward, Nebraska.

Anna Hau (Howe) was born in Biersdorf, Germany, March 10, 1855. She came to America with her family in 1881, settling near St. Edward, Nebraska.

Cornelius and Anna were married at St. Bernard in Platte County, on April 18, 1882. It was only a church on the prairie. They farmed near St. Edward, living in a sod house, and for three years had no neighbors for miles and miles. In the blizzard of 1888, six of his cows were frozen to death.

In 1894 they moved to the Raeville community, to farm now occupied by the Raymond Bode family. The Railroad Co. offered to buy a plot of ground to build a depot, but after consultation with a parish priest and members of the community they declined the offer. It was feared that having a depot would open the community to unwanted outside influence. The Koch family lived on other farms in the Petersburg-Raeville territory and when they retired, they moved to Petersburg.

On April 18, 1932 Cornelius and Anna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a High Mass at St. John Church with Rev. Father Schopp as celebrant. Anna died on November 26, 1934, and Cornelius passed away January 12, 1944.

They were parents of eight children: Mary Loxterkamp, Catherine Grone, William N., John C., Frank J., Anton F., Bernard M., and Anna, who died in infancy. They also adopted and raised an orphan from New York, Alex Cowan Koch. John and Alex are still alive at the present time.
